Is this the end of the brothers' political clout?
Article Abstract:
The UK's trade unions have much less political power today than they did in the 1970s. Indeed, it could even be argued that the extensive political power which trade unions wielded in the 1970s caused them considerable long-term damage. Prime Minister Tony Blair now has little reason to fear the trade unions, as long as they do not attempt to use their seats on the Labour party's national executive or their strength in the National Policy Forum to recreate the conditions of the 1970s. There is no reason why the trade unions should necessarily have very close link with the Labour party, even though their existence is healthy in a modern democracy.

A seismic shift in the political landscape
Article Abstract:
The recent general election in the UK has been characterized by developments which are indications of a seismic shift in the country's political landscape. Voters have shown an ability to differentiate between minor and major misconduct among politicians, for example, and has also been prepared to accepted candidates who do not conform to the traditional stereotype of a politician. Conservatism has been almost totally eliminated in Wales and Scotland, and it may now be possible for Labour to become the natural party of government.

There's a right way and a wrong way to pay off your political debts
Article Abstract:
Recent controversy over relations between lobbyists and the UK government has highlighted the need to review the whole subject of business access to government. This is because the actions of modern government have a significant impact on profits and stock market values. There is considerable frustration that a certain number of businessmen and outsiders have a significant degree of access to the centre of power. It is now time for Prime Minister Tony Blair to make the wider Labour party feel that it is important again.
