Look to the skies - it's eclipse time again
Article Abstract:
The total eclipse of the sun which will take place in the Caribbean on Feb 26, 1998, will be one of the most interesting of the 1990s. Lasting for more than four minutes, it will be visible from Colombia to Antigua. This eclipse is likely to attract great attention from both professional and amateur astronomers, especially as the key viewing sites are relatively accessible. Research linked with this eclipse will cover a number of different issues, including the temperature of the corona, the sun's outer atmosphere.

Chasing gravity's rainbow
Article Abstract:
The Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) project, administered by Caltech and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and funded by the US National Science Foundation, aims to test Einstein's belief that extremely large objects emit gravitational waves under certain conditions. Researchers will seek evidence of gravitational waves from some of the most energetic phenomena known to exist, including colliding black holes and supernova explosions.

Did the earth move for you?
Article Abstract:
Research undertaken at the University of Toronto, Canada, indicates that fluctuations in sea levels may be caused by the spinning of the earth on its axis. It appears that this spinning may cause the earth's crust to wobble around the rotation axis. As a result, the earth's crust deforms, which in turn prompts significant changes in sea levels. This finding goes against the traditional view that sea level changes are caused by the spreading rate of tectonic plates.
