Looking down on an age of extremes
Article Abstract:
There was a strong atmosphere of hope and expectation in the UK after victory in the second world war, with most people welcoming social change, according to historian Eric Hobsdawm. It was not until the 1960s that people really started to realise that this positive mood had not brought about concrete results. It then became clear that there were problems with the economy, and that the UK had won the war but lost the peace. At present, one of the main social dangers facing the UK is the resurgence of the forces which were defeated in the second world war.

Bone idlers
Article Abstract:
Latest archaeological finds indicate that primitive stone tools were being used by ancient man from a very early stage in history. However, for 2 million years early human beings were responsible for almost no technological innovation at all. This could be because simply existing took up all their time and energy, or because human beings are basically extremely conservative. Some observers feel that early human beings did not have the intelligence to make innovations.

Cycle logical warfare
Article Abstract:
The Reclaim The Streets pro-cycling campaign has received negative media coverage in the UK, with its members being characterised as aggressive and determined to disrupt everyday life for others. However, the members emphasise that they in fact take a very positive approach to their activities, which include holding public demonstrations. They take collective responsibility for their work, and the group has no formal hierarchy.
