Article Abstract:
Critics of the 1998 G8 summit in Birmingham, England, believe that the Foreign Office's budget of 8.3 million pounds sterling for the event would have been better spent on directly helping the world's poorest countries. They feel that the summit was a waste of time and money because no significant progress was made on the core issue of meeting human needs. The summit attracted strong protests from debt relief campaigners, who believe that more action should be taken to reduce the debts of the poorest countries.
