Lord Taylor opens door to public scrutiny
Article Abstract:
Lord Taylor became Lord Chief Justice in April 1992 and supports legal system amendments to prevent further miscarriages of justice. He upholds full disclosure of evidence and believes in an independent organisation to supervise police investigations. He recommends that confessions should be accompanied by judicial warnings and that forensic science facilities should be available to the defence and from neutral experts. He suggests a change in the system for appeals against miscarriages of justice and opposes an end to mandatory life sentences.

Crime: is anybody safe out there?
Article Abstract:
There have been a number of violent attacks recently in wealthy parts of London, with particular concern being caused by an incident in which a woman was raped and robbed during a two-hour ordeal in daylight in Regent's Park. It is clear that there are no really safe areas of London any more, with the risk of being a victim of violent crime or house burglary having trebled over the last 15 years. Police report that people are often reluctant to become involved if they suspect a crime is being carried out, as they are afraid of getting hurt.

Knock on the door brings growing fear of racial abuse and attack
Article Abstract:
The Greenwich Action Committee against Racist Attacks has noted over 200 incidents in 1991/2, over half of them violent attacks on council estate residents. The emergence of the neo-Nazi British National Party in Greenwich may have caused the increase. Racial violence is escalating nationwide. Media attention escalates problems for refugees. Anti-racist policies have not been implemented and new laws are needed.
