Why Stephen was paid to stay in hospital
Article Abstract:
Many volunteers earn money by acting as guinea pigs on whom drugs are tested, but there are no laws about good practice, only guidelines which are often circumnavigated. The Royal College of Nursing called for trials to be banned in 1990. A two-week trial at the contract unit hired by pharmaceutical companies at Guy's Hospital, London pays each volunteer nearly 2,000 pounds sterling. Healthy volunteers establish the absorption and distribution of new drugs and side effects before testing on the disease. Guy's conducts 40 trials of 30 drugs for 20 companies a year. A central register possibly organised by ethics committes in medical schools and health districts could police, endorse and inspect drugs trials.

Bring me the women of middle England
Article Abstract:
Tessa Jowell, UK Labour Party potential Minister for Women, will complete on July 25 1996 her four month 'Listening to Women' tour of the UK visiting women's organisations to win the support of middle-aged, middle class women. Jowell has spent the majority of Thursdays during that time having lunch with women belonging to apolitical bodies including the Catholic Mothers' Union, the Soroptomists, the Mothers' Union, and the Women's Institute. Although she has been accompanied by Labour Members of Parliament and spokesmen and taken along membership forms, Jowell insists that the visits have been for her to find out about women's concerns.

How did we get here, then?
Article Abstract:
The post-war baby boom generation in the UK, made up of people now entering their 40s, have developed very different lifestyles from those of earlier generations. For women especially, experiences of life are now very much more varied than they were in the past, and a typical 40-year-old woman is now very hard to characterise. Some have only recently had children, while others have chosen not to marry or not to have children.
