Is it time for the Grim Reaper to pick up his P45?
Article Abstract:
Average life expectancy has increased considerably over the past 200 years, and has now reached around 78 years, with women living slightly longer than men. Scientists are now working on isolating a 'gene for longevity,' which could have the potential to prolong human life by 40 years and to delay the onset of some diseases associated with old age. However, some observers are expressing doubts about whether science can really fight off death in this way. Whatever scientific advances are made, it is most unlikely that people will live beyond 120 years.

A matter of life and death
Article Abstract:
Animals need prions as protection against breathing oxygen, according to biochemist David Brown. Prions cause a range of unusual nervous diseases, but also act as a key defence mechanism against superoxide, the highly reactive form of oxygen. Brown believes that prions have a particularly significant role to play at the synapses between brain cells, absorbing superoxide before it is able to damage these connections within the central nervous system.
