Lucky Strike or poisoned chalice?
Article Abstract:
Cambridge University is the subject of considerable controversy as it decides whether to accept an offer of sponsorship for its department of international studies from BAT Industries, one of the largest tobacco concerns in the world. Some observers feel that the university should disassociate itself from smoking, which is widely accepted as very harmful, at all costs. Others point out that many sources of finance could be interpreted as rather dubious, and that universities would get very little money at all if they rejected all of these offers.

Why the Bomb did not win the War
Article Abstract:
The decision by Japan to give in to the allies' ultimatum at the end of the second world war has been widely attributed the dropping of atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In fact, this was not really the case. Before the second bomb was dropped, the Soviet Union, which had hitherto been neutral, declared war on Japan, and subsequently invaded Manchuria, China and Korea. It was this threat of a Soviet invasion which was the main driving force behind Japan's surrender.

The sheep that shook the world
Article Abstract:
There has been considerable controversy surrounding the cloning of a sheep at Roslin Laboratories near Edinburgh, Scotland. The concept of cloning is not a new one, even to people who have no scientific background, but people still find it hard to believe that what has previously belonged only to the realms of science fiction is now becoming reality. The main issue relating to cloning is that it challenges the deeply embedded belief that each person is born unique.
