MTM case was a human tragedy
Article Abstract:
The sudden collapse in 1992 of speciality chemical concern MTM was really the result of purchasing two large US companies in 1990, which placed great pressure on MTM's finances. When financial problems arose, the company started to falsify the figures in its annual accounts. The company's fate was human tragedy to a certain extent, with the City exerting great pressure for rapid growth to which senior executives responded by turning to false accounting. It also indicates how easily it is to manipulate accounting earnings.

To pick one unit trust from 1,600 you need to do your homework
Article Abstract:
Significant changes are currently taking place in the way that the management of unit trusts is organized. This means that past performance is a very unreliable indicator of future performance for those seeking to select the best unit trusts. However, research indicates that good organization and skill can ensure that some companies consistently outperform the unit trust sector as a whole. Ordinary investors should focus on funds which have a consistent record of above-average performance, linked with low volatility.

Sensing changes ahead in balance of risks
Article Abstract:
It is extremely difficult to forecast trends in key economic indicators such as interest rates. However, it is clear that a genuine decision point has now been reached with regard to global interest rates. It would be wrong to make a definite prediction about whether the interest rate decline is coming to a permanent end. However, it appears that the balance of risks in most countries is against the interest rate decline going on much longer.
