Introducing tougher sentences for burglary and violent offences, as Home Secretary Michael Howard plans in a new Crime Bill, will make it very hard to ensure that justice is carried out according to the circumstances of each case, according to Lord Taylor, the Lord Chief Justice. His angry remarks highlight the growing split between the judiciary and the government over penal policy. Under the new Crime Bill, parliament will take some control over sentencing away from judges.

Furious Blair will boycott Scott preview
