Make way for a rough new gang
Article Abstract:
The UK House of Commons has traditionally been dominated by politicians who share a very similar background. Many of them were educated at the ancient universities, especially Oxford and Cambridge, and they understand each other, even if they do not always share the same political views. Following the forthcoming general election, the House of Commons is likely to move a long way away from this structure. A considerable number of the people who are currently standing as parliamentary candidates have been affected by the new era of student politics which began in the 1960s.

Beware politicians on the Internet, as they find forms of manipulation
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and Conservative party leader William Hague have both been involved in communicating with voters via computer. These ventures did not really succeed in demonstrating that computers can work to the benefit of democracy. However, they did indicate that a new form of democracy in which decisions can be made instantly and collectively may emerge shortly. Computers will begin to place democracy in the hands of ordinary people, rather than politicians, and in the future political parties may lose their significance.

Tony Blair, the first African PM
Article Abstract:
There are parallels between United Kingdom and African politics. The UK prime minister, Tony Blair, could be said to have Nelson Mandela as his hero. He uses rhetoric relating to unity, ending tribalism and healing wounds that could come from African leaders. There is a danger that the ruling party may seek to embrace all opinions and that methods to achieve consensus become too complex to be practical. It is to be hoped that the model Blair seeks to follow is Mandela and not Mobutu.
