Malaysia puts itself on trial
Article Abstract:
It was ironic that the triennial Commonwealth Law Conference, which took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in Sep 1999, placed considerable emphasis on human rights. Three human rights-related cases received extensive publicity just as the 1,400 lawyers who attended the conference were arriving. These cases involved Canadian journalist Murray Hiebert, who was imprisoned for questioning the independence of the Malaysian judiciary, former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who has been jailed for corruption, and Malaysian lawyer Param Cumaraswamy.

Britons await verdict in Yemen terrorism trial
Article Abstract:
The eight British Muslims and an Algerian accused of plotting terrorism in Yemen claim that their confessions were extracted through the use of torture. Their case has attracted considerable controversy, especially the fact that their request for an independent medical examination to verify their claims that they were tortured was rejected. Each defendant offers different reasons for being in Yemen, and some do not appear to be linked with each other.
