Article Abstract:
The tax reforms contained in the 1999 Budget will benefit the hard-working majority, according to UK Chancellor Gordon Brown. The government is determined to work towards a future based on enterprise and fairness, bringing improved standards of living for everyone and higher standards in public services. There will be measures to assist small businesses, and the tax system will be adjusted to ensure that families become better off. The government will also allocate additional funding for key public services, including crime prevention and education.

Professor Michael Beesley
Article Abstract:
Economist Michael Beesley studied Commerce at Birmingham University, England. He briefly went into business with his family, and this assisted him with his PhD research on cartel behaviour in the metal business. He became a Lecturer in Commerce at Birmingham University in 1951, and in 1961 moved to the London School of Economics. He became Reader in Economics in 1964. He was appointed one of two founding Professors of Economics at the London Business School in 1965.
