Man v machine
Article Abstract:
Very mixed views have been expressed about the recent defeat of world chess champion Garry Kasparov by IBM's Deep Blue computer. Some observers have claimed that this indicates that human beings are really no more than extremely complex machines. It is certainly true that great progress has been made in the field of artificial intelligence, and it can be argued quite convincingly that it is theoretically possible for the cognitive powers of the human mind to be matched by a computer. However, computers will never be capable of consciousness.

Gendered employment in the U.S. auto industry: a case study of the Ford Motor Co. Phoenix plant, 1922-1940
Article Abstract:
Companies institute a gender division of labor to have capitalist control over a low wage labor pool. However, in Ford Motor Co.'s Phoenix, MI plant, the gender division of labor was not employed to discriminate against women. Ford Motor Co. was not a low-wage employer of women from 1922-1940. While women workers earned less than their male counterparts in other Ford Motor plants, they earned a wage premium equal to or more than the wages received by average male manufacturing workers.
