Mandelson: the push for power
Article Abstract:
Peter Mandelson was determined that the Labour party would be prepared for every possible eventuality in the run-up to the May 1997 general election. He focused his attention exclusively on ensuring that the Labour party did not become distracted as the election approached. He monitored the party's public relations activities extremely closely, carefully avoiding any signs of confusion or indiscipline. When Labour actually won the election, he felt isolated and deflated.
