Marching with forces of change
Article Abstract:
There is now growing pressure for cultural changes within the UK's armed forces if they are to be able to recruit and retain qualified personnel into the 21st century. They currently still have a positive image, but they need to find a new role and must adopt a new attitude to recruitment. One possibility is to offer two employment options: a structured career for those seeking a 'job for life' and short-term periods of employment for those seeking skills which will be useful in civilian life.

From total war to local war: it's a revolution
Article Abstract:
The situation in Northern Ireland, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Burundi is indicative of how some countries intervene in the civil wars of others. There needs to be global action to bring wars to an end. The United Nations was expected to provide its own army, bringing fast intervention in the case of international disputes, but it gathers groups from various countries, and usually leaves its arrival until too late. This was the case in Rwanda and Bosnia and could also be the case in Burundi.

War without casualties
Article Abstract:
A new BBC four-part documentary series entitled 'The Gulf War' highlights the significance of this war in changing the attitudes of western nations to war and peace. Allied and Iraqi casualties were the key element in bringing about this change. There were relatively few western casualties, but they still dominate discussions about the war today. The war was brought to an end mainly out of concern for Allied and Iraqi lives.
