Marian Pepler
Article Abstract:
Marian Pepler was a rug designer whose work contrasted with that of other designers in the 1930s by being understated and geared to harmonize with its surroundings. She was the daughter of an architect who married a furniture designer, Richard Russell. He set up Gordon Russell Ltd with his brother, and became a director of the company, while Marian Pepler became the fabric buyer for the firm. She aimed to produce affordable rugs, and learnt weaving in order for her designs to be understood by weavers.

Barbara
Article Abstract:
Singer and songwriter Monique Serf, known as Barbara, was trained at the Conservatoire de Paris, where her talent for classical singing was recognized. She had exceptional breath control, and often composed music which was suited only to her voice. She found it hard to gain work, possibly because her music was too strongly connected with loneliness and unhappiness. However, sales of her last album, 'Barbara,' recorded in 1996, are approaching 1 million.
