Mayday! Humanities get that sinking feeling
Article Abstract:
The UK's Qualifications and Curriculum Authority is to begin reviewing the national curriculum in summer 1998, aiming to implement a new structure in 2000. It is believe that the government wants the revised national curriculum to focus on basic numeracy and literacy skills, along with technology and a foreign language. This could mean that less emphasis is given to non-core subjects such as music, art, history and geography. Organizations such as the Historical Association and the Royal Geographical Society are fighting hard to emphasize the importance of their subject.

Museum pieces
Article Abstract:
There are 23 museums and galleries at 13 universities in the UK, receiving an annual grant from the Higher Education Funding Council for England. This funding meets only around two-thirds of running costs, and universities can therefore be in a difficult position if heavy expenditure is required unexpectedly. These museums and galleries contain some extremely important pieces, but their existence is very precarious.
