McAlpine's Fusiliers march back to Dublin as a building boom sends wages soaring
Article Abstract:
The Irish construction industry saw output rise by 50% between 1994 and 1996, and is likely to continue to expand until at least 2003. This is encouraging many Irish building workers who moved to England to seek employment to return to Ireland, where the number of on-site jobs in the construction industry is set to exceed 100,000 in 2000. The flow of building workers back to Ireland is likely to lead to a serious shortage of skilled labour on building sites in England.

Ireland's old Machiavelli keeps mum on cash scandal
Article Abstract:
There has been intense speculation about the identity of the Fianna Fail politician who is alleged to have received more than 1 million pounds sterling in secret payments from businessman Ben Dunne. Some observers are even pointing to former taoiseach Charles Haughey. The source of his considerable wealth has been the subject of speculation for some time. Sources close to Haughey reveal that he is strongly denying having received any money from Dunne.

Ireland used as drugs gateway to Britain
Article Abstract:
The least-patrolled 2,000 miles of Irish coastline may be the most common route by which illegal drugs are brought into the UK and continental Europe. Illegal drugs worth more than 200 million Irish punts have been seized in Ireland over the last three years, with the latest seizure being 15 tonnes of cannabis. However, it is still likely that a large volume of drugs comes into the country without being detected.
