Meanwhile, back at the bat cave
Article Abstract:
In 1992 the mouse-eared bat was pronounced extinct in the UK, the first mammal to disappear from British soil since the wolf in the 1740's, and considerable efforts are now going on to prevent the same thing happening to the greater horseshoe bat. In Dorset, specially built hibernation accommodation has, over the last three years, led numbers to rise from 90 to over 200. Bats are difficult to help as their needs differ with their ages. Older adult female bats need higher hibernation temperatures, social groupings vary and males are solitary and territorial during the breeding season.

Petrol up 3p in drive to cut back on car use
Article Abstract:
The UK government's 1996 Budget included a rise of 3p a litre in the price of petrol and diesel. There has also been a 5 pounds sterling rise to 145 pounds sterling in the cost of an annual car tax disc. The average motorist will now face extra costs of 65 pounds sterling a year, according to the RAC. There has been strong opposition from a number of sources to the additional burden being imposed on motorists, especially in the light of the government's decision to cancel a further 110 highway schemes.

Lara's back, but is he still the best?
Article Abstract:
Cricket player Brian Lara played spectacularly during the West Indian team's tour of the UK in 1994, and is currently the biggest star in the game. He has attracted great media attention, and has already become the target of myths and misinformation. He is very marketable, which is a very important asset for a modern sporting star.
