Acupuncture - what's the point?
Article Abstract:
Traditional acupuncturists use the therapy to treat specific diseases, as well as non-specific and minor conditions. In the western world, acupuncture is used mainly for painful conditions. Clinical trials of acupuncture continue to give mixed results about its effectiveness, but an evaluation of all the available data indicates that acupuncture is useful in the treatment of dental pain, nausea and vomiting and low back pain when not caused by a specific disease. It is important to be aware that acupuncture is not entirely free of unwanted side-effects and complications.

The all-consuming chromosome
Article Abstract:
People suffering from the rare condition Prader-Willi Syndrome are obsessed with eating. They do not have the normal sensations of fullness that ordinary people experience after eating, and therefore eat vast quantities, leading them to put on a great deal of weight. They tend to have temper tantrums, and often have weak muscles, under-developed genitals and unusual facial characteristics. The syndrome is caused by a defect on chromosome 15. This can now be detected by a blood test in almost all cases.

Saved by a joyous break with the past
Article Abstract:
Ankylosing spondylitis, an inflammation of the joints similar to arthritis, can cause the bones at the top of the spine to crumble and fuse, thus pushing the sufferer's chin onto their chest. The only option when the disease becomes this severe may be surgery, which involves breaking the neck, straightening it and inserting steel poles to hold it in an upright position. The surgery is extremely complicated, and there is a one in 10 chance of death on the operating table.
