Meet George Jetson's new computer
Article Abstract:
Apple Computer has significantly reduced its product range since Steve Jobs became chief executive in Jul 1997. It relaunched its professional desktop computer in Nov 1997, and has also launched a new range of portable PowerBook computers based on the G3 processor. Observers have reacted with surprise to the news that it will make a futuristic home computer called the iMac available in Aug 1998. This is an all-in-one model, with the monitor and main circuit board located together in a transluscent blue-green, pod-shaped unit. It has a built-in modem, along with an Ethernet network interface.

Starting a dialogue with your computer
Article Abstract:
Computer manufacturers research voice recognition to simplify usage. A microphone linked to the computer can relate one-word commands to the computer's own commands, but this requires a digital signal processor. The Voice Navigator system is used by disabled people and in computer-aided design. Home-banking uses voice-controlled systems. Apple has developed Casper, which can understand continuous speech and accents. This could control electrical devices such as videos, washing machines and cashpoints.

Newton is dead. Long live eMate
Article Abstract:
Apple Computer has decided that it can no longer afford to develop both its Newton software and Mac OS, the operating system that it uses for its desktop and laptop Macintosh computers. For this reason, it has decided to stop development of Newton software. It will now produce new versions of the eMate 300, the companion to the Newton product range, based on the Mac OS. The eMate, which is basically a Newton with a proper keyboard, has been very successful.
