Middle England's not worth listening to
Article Abstract:
There have been mixed reactions to plans by James Boyle, the controller of BBC Radio 4, to make significant changes to the station's programming. Some observers believe that Radio 4's standards will fall, while others think that any changes would be almost certain to bring an improvement to Radio 4's programming. At present, Radio 4 has a considerable number of specialist programmes which lack popular appeal, and its schedule would be improved by removing them. Defenders of Radio 4 should realize that change will not necessarily be for the worse.

Biting back at Birtism
Article Abstract:
The BBC has made considerable efforts to become more accountable and effective over recent years. However, these changes have not been seen in the area of patronage. The BBC still has privileged access to a number of leading social events, and is keen to gain the support of people who could significantly influence its future, such as Secretary of State for National Heritage Chris Smith. There are no signs of managerialism at the BBC diminishing, even though Smith has stated that the governance of the BBC should be reformed.

What's wrong with the BBC today ...
Article Abstract:
The BBC has faced many serious problems over recent years, and has done well to survive. However, this does not mean that its difficulties are now over. Its reporting lacks spontaneity and comment, and there is a still a great reluctance to pass judgement on controversial issues. Indeed, the BBC's focus on neutrality sometimes causes it to put forward points of view which are plainly ridiculous. It is now time for the BBC to put its new political independence to better use.
