Milos vs the people
Article Abstract:
There were many extremely talented film-makers and writers working in drama and film schools in Czechoslovakia in the 1950s, as they were not permitted to make their work available to the general public, according to film-maker Milos Forman. He trained in this very inspiring environment, and he remains in contact with many of the key figures of modern Czech art. His latest project is 'The People vs Larry Flynt,' which tells the true story of a wheelchair-bound pornographer.

Bound but not gagged
Article Abstract:
Film-maker Nick Broomfield believes that Channel 4 will have the confidence to screen his documentary 'Fetishes,' which shows customers at an S&M parlour in Manhattan. The film has already been shown on late-night television in the US, and was also screened at the Edinburgh Film Festival and London Film Festival in 1996. It contains a number of scenes of people in considerable pain, but Broomfield did not generally feel uncomfortable about filming such incidents.

Shall we step out of line?
Article Abstract:
The Japanese are brought up to suppress their emotions, according to Japanese film director Masayuki Suo. His film 'Shall We Dance?' is partly to do with learning how to express emotion. He wanted to encourage the Japanese to appreciate and enjoy life, but not necessarily to adopt an American lifestyle. He entered filmmaking through pornographic films, but subsequent films shifted towards more mainstream areas of Japanese culture.
