Novel ways to miss the Booker Prize
Article Abstract:
Most male novelists do not even attempt to write from a woman's point of view, according to novelist Brian Moore. Some of his early novels are set in Ireland, but the fact that he is Irish does not really come across in his writing. However, he is beginning to feel more and more Irish as he grows older. He has been on the shortlist for the Booker Prize three times, and feels that this may be sufficient to stop him ever actually winning the prize. He has recently published his 20th novel, 'The Magician's Wife.'

The last of the angry young men
Article Abstract:
Novelist David Storey has always welcomed the anonymity of living in London, England. He feels that he has gone beyond needing public applause, and has gone through a long period of publishing no new material. However, a new novel, entitled 'A Serious Man,' was published in Jun 1998. This was actually written in the mid-1980s. In spring 1999 he will publish a novel on which he has been working sporadically since 1962.

The double-life of Josef Skvorecky
Article Abstract:
Writing about life in the contemporary Czech Republic would not be appropriate, according to Czech novelist Josef Skvorecky, who has lived in exile since 1969. He has over recent years begun looking at the past, rather than describing his own experiences of life in Czechoslovakia under Nazi domination. His work has included 'The Bride of Texas,' which deals with the American Civil War.
