Mission impossible
Article Abstract:
Airbus Industrie has been successful in breaking the US monopoly of the big jet airliner market. However, it has taken very large amounts of taxpayers' money, with almost no accountability, and there is considerable conflict between its partners. It has now been given until the end of summer 1999 to make real progress towards becoming a Single Corporate Entity. The key element in bringing about this change in status could be the planned A3XX 555-seater double-deck super-jumbo. The UK has told Airbus that it will not help to fund this project unless it becomes a Single Corporate Entity.

Asian flu kills off 48,000 jobs at Boeing
Article Abstract:
Boeing, the largest aircraft manufacturer in the world, has announced that it plans to reduce its workforce by a fifth, or 48,000 employees, in the period to 2000 and to make significant cuts in output. The company has been badly affected by economic turmoil in Asia, which has led to a fall in passenger numbers and therefore in demand for passenger jets. A cut in output at Boeing will have a substantial ongoing impact, as many companies depend heavily on Boeing for orders.
