Mobutu Sese Seko
Article Abstract:
Politician Joseph-Desire Mobutu, known as Mobutu Sese Seko, came from a poor background and was conscripted into the Force Publique, the colonial Congolese Army, in 1949. This experience was to prove very useful in later life. He became army chief of staff at the age of 29, and in 1965 seized power in a coup backed by the CIA, becoming president of Zaire. He was strongly supported by western countries, even though he headed a one-party state. He accumulated great wealth for himself, while most ordinary people in Zaire lived in extremely poor conditions.
