Moroccans brave death in quest for 'El Dorado.' (illegal migration toSpain)
Article Abstract:
There has been a strong rise recently in the numberof Africans and Maghrebis attempting to cross the Strait of Gilbraltar from Morocco to Spain.Soldiers patrolling the Spanish coast have already detained 796 illegal immigrants so far in 1995,most of them Moroccans. Most enter Spain's grey economy, as tightened bureaucracy has made itvery hard for them to obtain official permission to remain in Spain. More people have beenprompted to attempt the hazardous crossing by the drought in Morocco, which has created verydifficult conditions for farm workers.

A stranger's tour of hashish's dark heartland
Article Abstract:
There is generally little sign of police activity in the area between Chefchauen, Morocco, and Ketama, Morocco, the centre of hashish production in the country. Local tribesmen treat strangers with suspicion, but there is also considerable pressure on strangers to purchase hashish. The government invests $80 million a year on 5,000 additional security forces for the region, but it is impossible to patrol the lengthy coast road to prevent drug trafficking and illegal emigration.

Miners man the barricades in a losing battle against cuts
Article Abstract:
The miners of the Asturias region of Spain have a long history of militancy. However, their power has waned during the 1990s. It is much more expensive to extract coal in this region than in South Africa or Poland, and the coal is of relatively poor quality. State coal company Hunosa now employs around 10,000 miners, from 18,500 in 1988 and 26,000 in 1967, and made losses of 45 billion pesetas in 1997. Miners are now striking against plans for further reductions in output.
