Mortal mortar
Article Abstract:
It is very difficult to state how long a significant public building or structure should really last. The Great Pyramid of Cheops, for example, has survived for centuries, while the Pompidou Centre in Paris, France, is receiving a 50 million pounds sterling refit after only 20 years. However, it must be remembered that the latter has had to cope with at least 3 million visitors a year, while the former is merely an empty shell. There are often good reasons which modern engineers and architects choose not to use the same construction techniques as masons working in ancient times.

A vision still worth fighting for
Article Abstract:
Finsbury Health Centre, designed by Berthold Lubetkin's Tecton group and completed in 1938, was the subject of controversy in 1943 when it featured on a propaganda poster. It is now a Grade 1 listed building, but is in a state of disrepair. Some parts of the building have been restored by Avanti, an architectural practice headed by John Allan, the biographier of Lubetkin, but it still requires further investment of 1.5 million pounds sterling.
