South's spokesman talks tough
Article Abstract:
Dr Mahathir, Prime Minister of Malaysia, addressed a conference in Kuala Lumpur on the environment in Apr 1992 attended by 55 developing countries, to produce a concerted statement before the Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit. He stated that Malaysia needs the income from its timber for development and if the West criticised logging they should provide development funds and lift trade barriers. He said it was hypocritical for the industrialised nations to expect Southern countries to conserve natural resources when they have depleted their own.

... But for British firms, the Eastern honeymoon is over
Article Abstract:
UK companies have generally found that they can make considerable cost savings by shifting production facilities to China, where they are closer to their sources of raw materials and labour costs are much lower than in the UK. However, investing in China can also bring many challenges. Bureaucracy can cause lengthy delays, and it can be difficult to obtain Chinese bank loans. Furthermore, staff may not be accustomed to British ways of working.
