At peace with God and Mammon in the new South
Article Abstract:
Pat Buchanan, who is seeking to be nominated as the Republican party's presidential candidate, is campaigning on the basis of a return to 1950s values. He sees the revival of a society where religious views are valued, where women stay at home to look after the children and where there is almost no crime. These attitudes are popular among some sections of the population, but he will also have to win over those with more modern views if he is to gain the party's nomination.

High Noon in Washington
Article Abstract:
The current conflict between president Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich, the Republican Speaker, is likely to have a significant impact on the political future of both men. It is fairly common for the US government to shut down when Congress and the White House are unable to agree on the budget, but the present shutdown may prove more significant than those in the past. The current clash is more about different visions of society than about economics.
