Un peu trop radical for Chirac
Article Abstract:
The recentresignation of French minister of economics Alain Madelin is particularly significant because ithighlights deep splits which are already emerging in president Jacques Chirac's government afteronly three months in power. Madelin and prime minister Alain Juppe both expressed the viewthat Chirac's twin policy priorities of reducing the domestic budget deficit and creatingemployment could not be operated together, with Juppe supporting job creation and Madelinreducing the deficit. The resignation of Madelin indicates that Juppe's views haveprevailed.

French crisis over Algeria gaffe
Article Abstract:
French president Francois Mitterrand has caused a considerable stir by suggesting a European conference on Algeria. The Algerian ambassador has been recalled from Paris, the Algerian media has launched a bitter attack on France and splits have developed between the president and the government of prime minister Edouard Balladur. Mitterrand's remarks could now make Algeria a top priority in French politics, something which the French government has been desperately trying to avoid.
