Mugging: is it a black and white issue?
Article Abstract:
The recent statement by Sir Paul Condon that young black men are responsible for 80% of muggings in high crime areas of London has attracted considerable controversy. Most observers accept that the statistics are probably correct, but believe that the statement was an over-simplification of a difficult situation. Many people have object to the fact that the statement implies that being black is in itself a significant issue in crime, and that it overlooks issues such as poverty, housing and unemployment.

Local radio? Why not news from your own street?
Article Abstract:
The UK Radio Authority is likely to award the last licence for London, England, to a station which will simply play mainstream music, like many others already operating in the city. In doing so, it will miss a valuable opportunity to give radio a community role. It would be better to divide the licence up into at least 12 small stations which could be offered to local community groups. This would help to create the sense of community which is currently so lacking in London.

The age of innocence is dead, killed by suspicion
Article Abstract:
Fears about child abuse have become widespread among many organisations in the UK. Most recently, this has been reflected in the decision by the Children's Country Holiday Fund, which organises country holidays for children from poor areas of London, to cancel all holidays for 1996. Child abuse is certainly a problem, but fears about it should not be allowed to hamper the work of highly respected voluntary organisations.
