My friend and mentor

Article Abstract:

A system of mentoring, in which pupils from schools in inner-city areas are put into contact with people who can provide positive role models, is proving very successful in London, England. Forming a relationship with someone who is in employment and can encourage the pupil to set high personal targets can lead to improved academic performance, a new attitude and better school attendance rates. It has been found that pupils will listen carefully to mentors, whereas they tend to ignore teachers and their families.

Article Abstract:

There was a dramatic change in the way in which the human mind operated between 100,000 and 30,000 years ago, according to Steven Mithen of Reading University. Before this time, the various parts of the human mind were isolated from each other, but after this time humans became able to integrate their knowledge. This prompted the emergence of art, significant technological changes and belief in supernatural beings. The change in the mind was adaptive, allowing early humans to survive in difficult conditions.

Article Abstract:

There has been a 5% fall in the proportion of men teaching in UK secondary schools over the last five years, with a total of 34,800 men having left the teaching profession. In secondary schools, only 4% of teachers are young men under the age of 30, while in primary schools young men account for only 1.7% of all teaching staff. This is causing considerable concern for the Teacher Training Agency.
