National champions unlikely to impress Labour
Article Abstract:
Recent events in the UK may serve to move the new Labour government away from an interventionist approach to competition policy based on national champions. In particular, the planned merger of Guinness and Grand Metropolitan gives cause for concern. The merger is mainly motived by a desire to cut costs and revive performance, achievements which could have been made in other ways. The recent attack by Sir Iain Vallance on the planned windfall profits tax on British Telecommunications may also serve to move the government away from supporting large monopolies.

A Governess for the Old Lady? Surely not!
Article Abstract:
It is possible that the UK government may consider selecting a woman as the next Bank of England Governor. The government has benefited greatly from the continuity offered by Eddie George, the current Governor, but the granting of limited independence to the Bank of England has made it much easier to instigate further change at this institution, if Chancellor Gordon Brown decides that this should happen. There is now much less need for the continuity provided by George, and it is possible that he will not gain a second term.

An independent Bank is Labour's litmus test
Article Abstract:
The UK Labour party is determined to ensure that it will not come into conflict with the Bank of England if it wins the forthcoming general election. Shadow chancellor Gordon Brown wishes to see almost complete policy agreement between a future Labour government and the Bank of England. This may lead to monetary policy being rather less tight than would otherwise have been the case, as compromises will inevitably have to be made.
