In Shakespeare's shadow
Article Abstract:
It is common for theatre critics to use William Shakespeare as a weapon with which to attack Ben Jonson, who seems to be widely misunderstood. In fact, Jonson has a number of very attractive features, including fascinating shifts between an impulse to classical severity and a temperamental attraction to the unruly and grotesque. It is possible that the Royal Shakespeare Company's forthcoming production of 'Volpone' will help to present Jonson more positively.
