New cholesterol treatment could prevent one-third of all heart attacks and strokes
Article Abstract:
The 21 million pounds sterling Heart Protection Study, led by the Clinical Trials Service Unit in Oxford, England, has established that statins, drugs that reduce cholesterol, substantially reduce the risk of experiencing the symptoms of cardiovascular disease. Statins were also found to reduce the risk of strokes in people with both average and high cholesterol levels.

A killer in sheep's clothing
Article Abstract:
The Spongiform Encephalopathy Advisory Committee, which advises the UK government on the science of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), is expected to recommend that further research be undertaken to establish whether BSE has been passed to sheep, thus affecting another link in the human food chain. This research will be very complex, as BSE in sheep is likely to very closely resemble scrapie, which has been in the sheep population for many years and has not posed a danger to human health.
