New economic miracle takes great leap of faith
Article Abstract:
Many ordinary people in the UK still lack confidence in the country's economic recovery, but some economists are starting to claim that an economic miracle is taking place. Manufacturing productivity, which has traditionally been a weak area of the economy, is showing constant underlying improvement, and much of the productivity gap between the UK and France and Germany in manufacturing has been eliminated. However, people will still want clear signs of economic recovery before they really believe that prospects are good.

Slowdown in growth fuels hopes of rate cut
Article Abstract:
The UK economy grew by only 0.5% in the second quarter of 1995, with economic growth falling below its underlying rate of increase for the first time in two years. The slowdown was mainly caused by a poor export performance, with the trade gap with non-European Union countries growing to 856 million pounds sterling. Analysts believe that the slowdown has vindicated the decision by chancellor Kenneth Clarke not to raise interest rates.

It feels bad now, but it looked good then
Article Abstract:
The UK's economy is currently undergoing a period of low inflation and interest rates which is very similar to that seen in the 1950s. Until recent years, the trend has been for sharp economic cycles, but the economy now seems to have started to fluctuate less dramatically. The prospects for inflation remain good, but there are now concerns about the future of unemployment.
