New moves to make shopping come home
Article Abstract:
UK supermarkets are beginning to test home delivery services, using a variety of approaches. Research indicates that home delivery could account for 10% of the UK food retail market by 2008, equivalent to sales of 15 billion pounds sterling. Supermarkets are being encouraged to move in this direction by the need to retain competitive advantage and by the belief that customers will eventually demand this service. Sainsbury's is now running a home delivery service from 32 stores, while Tesco Direct operates from 11 stores.

City urges Safeway to resurrect Asda merger talks
Article Abstract:
Safeway is coming under strong pressure from institutional shareholders to reopen negotiations about a 9 billion pounds sterling merger with fellow supermarket chain Asda. The two sides have abandoned negotiations because they feel that it will not be possible to obtain confidential advice from the Office of Fair Trading about whether the deal would be referred to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission. Some Safeway shareholders feel that a merger with Asda would allow it to gain critical mass.

Somerfield in talks with Kwik Save on 1.2bn pounds sterling merger deal
Article Abstract:
UK supermarket chains Kwik Save and Somerfield are holding talks that could lead to a merger worth 1.2 billion pounds sterling. This follows poor performance from both concerns. The merged operation would be the fifth-largest supermarket group in the UK, with combined sales of 6 billion pounds sterling from 1,400 stores. City analysts have reservations about the long-term potential from a merger of Kwik Save and Somerfield.
