Watching families and the rules of engagement
Article Abstract:
It is important to experience life if you are to see how it works, according to film director Cedric Klapisch. He was very interested in photography as a teenager, but realizes now that photography was distancing him from real life. His films battle against isolation in subtle ways, and present a view of Paris, France, which is very different from the conventional one. They give particular attention to how people interact in groups, with Klapisch being very concerned about families.

Reality bites, but movies hit home
Article Abstract:
Filmmaker Lee Tamahori is aware that he could have not spent his whole career working on social realist films, as people in his native New Zealand had come to expect him to. His first few films addressed sensitive social issues, but his more recent films have avoided direct politics in order to gain credibility in American cinema. In his most recent film, 'The Edge,' the main characters are pushed as close to what Tamahori regarded as a rite of passage as he could.
