New rivalries divide the East End
Article Abstract:
The East End of London's ghettos are seeing an increase in violent confrontations between Asian and Somali gangs. Most of the 166,000 inhabitants of Tower Hamlets are unemployed and live in council flats in estates such as the Ocean Estate. The Bengali population is 40,000 and the Somali population is 10,000. Children reject their own culture yet are not accepted by British culture. Policemen on the beat are social first-aiders and try to win young people's trust. Most residents of the Ocean Estate are Asian and half of them cannot speak English. The Ocean Estate gang, the Sheplu, fight to protect their territory and their rights to steal.

Illegal republic offers ideal sanctuary
Article Abstract:
The United Nations does not recognise the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Turkey invaded the island in 1974 when Turkish residents sought help in preventing Greek Cypriots uniting it with Greece. About 20,000 Turkish soldiers remain there in 1993. There is a government, parliament and an airline, but northern Cyprus is a colony of Turkey. Asil Nadir is respected because he campaigned for recognition of the republic and invested heavily in local business.
