Britain lets down the drawbridge
Article Abstract:
The Channel tunnel from Cheriton, Folkestone, England to Sangatte near Calais, France opens in 1993 to offer a one-hour journey from motorway to motorway, compared to two hours by ferry. The journey from Waterloo station, London to the Gare du Nord, Paris will take three hours. Short breaks in France and Belgium will become more popular than going to the West Country. Eurotunnel will offer three-day returns for car and passengers for about 75 pounds sterling. The Eurotunnel exhibition centre has a replica Shuttle wagon demonstrating the en route information radio and electronic services.

Bath: beauty and the bombs
Article Abstract:
In 1942, three German bombing raids were made on Bath, United Kingdom, following the destruction by the British of most of Lubeck, Germany. The Germans selected historic towns and buildings for attack by using a 'Baedeker' guide book. There were raids on other cities, but Bath was unprepared and suffered the most casualties as the bombs hit residential suburbs. Victims' relatives have planned a 50th anniversary remembrance service of the bombings, insisting that no Germans should be present.
