No significant risk from beef
Article Abstract:
Scientists accept that it is possible in theory for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) to cause a spongiform encephalopathy in humans. However, there is no proof of a direct link between BSE and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), and it cannot therefore be stated that eating beef could present a health risk for humans. Only the brain and spinal cord from affected cattle are infections, and the specified bovine offals (SBO) ban introduced in 1989 prevents these parts of the cow from entering the human food chain.

Why we should all give up beef
Article Abstract:
The UK government has emphasised that there is no risk of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), which has killed many cows, being transmitted to people. However, experts increasingly agree that their is a danger. Little is known about the transmissible agent in BSE, and it could be many years before the disease is really seen in humans. It is worth considering not eating beef at all until there is clear evidence about the risk of BSE being transmitted to humans.

Catastrophe est la faute des Rosbifs
Article Abstract:
French farmers are finding it difficult to sell their cattle as a result of the crisis over bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in the UK. They feel very bitter that their beef has gained a negative image through developments over which they have had no control. French consumers have been avoiding beef offal, and overseas markets have also fallen dramatically. This is happening even though France has only had 19 cases of BSE since 1991.
