Survival of the strongest
Article Abstract:
Children respond in very different ways to traumatic experiences such as divorce and bereavement. Some react very badly, while others seem to remain unscathed. Researchers are now looking in detail at what makes some children more resilient than others. Some evidence indicates biological effects, while other evidence shows that children develop a mind set in response to suffering. It is clear that the dangers associated with psychological damage are cumulative, and that benefits can be derived from reducing the overall level of risk.

The National Health Service may be far more sickly than we think
Article Abstract:
Key evidence presented to the public inquiry into the activities of some surgeons at Bristol Royal Infirmary indicates that the problems at this hospital involved much more than the skill of two surgeons. It is clear that there were difficulties with diagnosis, along with poor initial care and delays in obtaining treatment for children with heart defects. There seems to have been a large-scale institutional failure, for which the two surgeons have been made scapegoats. This is of serious concern for the National Health Service.
