Article Abstract:

Dr Andrew Wakefield was strongly aware that there would be serious repercussions from his decision to publish research indicating a link between the MMR vaccination for mumps, measles and rubella and autism and inflammatory bowel disease. He felt that he could not overlook the trauma experienced by parents who believe that the vaccination was responsible for serious health problems in their children. He believes that doctors have a responsibility to make people aware of potential problems and that they should not try to avoid controversy.

Wake-up call for a new drug

Article Abstract:

The drug Modafinal, which is currently being tested as a treatment for the sleep disorder narcolepsy, could have a wide range of potential applications. It acts on the brain in a completely different way from amphetamine-based drugs, and has no effect on the hormone noradrenaline, which makes people aggressive. There are indications that it does not simply keep people awake for a short time and then cause rebound sleepiness. Other applications could include treating jet lag and disturbed sleep.

Scientists unlock the secrets of women's sexual attractiveness

Article Abstract:

Research undertaken at the University of Newcastle, England, challenges the traditional view that a woman's sexual attractiveness is determined by the ratio of her hip-to-waist size. It appears that body-mass index is much more significant than waist-hip ratio in determining men's views on whether a woman is sexually attractive. The researchers involved in this work believe that this finding is not surprising, given that weight is a very good predictor of health.
