Nothing for something - the Nineties way
Article Abstract:
Working temporarily on a voluntary basis has become a common way of obtaining a permanent, paid job in the UK. Voluntary work is often very informal in nature, and this means that there are no reliable statistics about it. In some cases, people working for no pay are exploited, with employers using them as unpaid labour for as long as possible simply by hinting at the possibility of a paid job at some time in the future. Unpaid work is particularly common in the arts, the media and the environment.

Men in peril, enter Beryl
Article Abstract:
The best television producers are those who rely on instinct and avoid focus groups, according to Beryl Vertue. She was the first person to sell formats of television situation comedies in the UK, and was very influential in the US for a short time in the 1970s. She feels that it is very important not to become too restricted by rules, and has gained a reputation for being extremely capable. She is willing to become involved in any project which she regards as logical and practical.

Where did Gracia go?
Article Abstract:
Friends and relatives of Gracia Morton, who disappeared on Nov 12, 1997, believe that she has been murdered. They claim that she was well-off and happy and that she would never have voluntarily abandoned her four-year-old daughter. The police are still regarding her as a missing person, although they admit that this is a strange disappearance. There are no clues at all about what could have happened to her, and no money has been withdrawn from her bank account.
