Rising from the ashes?
Article Abstract:
The European Space Agency's Science Policy committee is shortly to meet to decide whether to go ahead with the 'Phoenix' project, under which the experiments lost when the Ariane 5 space rocket exploded in Jun 1996 would be relaunched. This would require funding of around 150 million pounds sterling, with costs being kept as low as possible by using spares from the original space rocket. For British scientists, it will only be possible to participate if the UK government is willing to provide an additional 7 million pounds sterling in funding over the next four years.

Time to face the true cost of the Earth?
Article Abstract:
Earth scientists are making considerable efforts to place a value on the natural world. This is particularly the case in the US, where experts are seeking to estimate the value of the services provided by the environment. Some observers believe that the pace of environmental damage could lead to a very significant rise in the cost of basic necessities in the foreseeable future. However, natural processes will in almost every case be less expensive than manufactured ones.
