The last testament of a hollow man
Article Abstract:
The election manifesto launched recently by the UK Conservative party is a clear reflection of the fact that prime minister John Major has always lacked vision. The manifesto is very typical of him in its style, form and lack of content, and is little more than a thinly disguised reworking of old ideas. It offers nothing at all for the poor, and the most attractive incentives are aimed at the rich. It gives a great deal of attention to the strength of the economy, but this will not be enough to ensure that the Conservative party wins the general election.

Dead? No, the Tory tiger is still a dangerous beast
Article Abstract:
The mood at the UK Conservative party's 1997 annual conference shows clearly that the party is still seriously split. It remains in a state of crisis, with nobody being prepared to take the blame for losing the general election. The party still has many members who believe firmly in traditional conservative values, and they are convinced that their views will eventually prevail. It is certainly true that some of the party's less attractive values are still shared by many ordinary Britons, and this means that the party cannot be completely dismissed.

Schism, here we come!
Article Abstract:
The UK Conservative party will make great efforts to create an impression of unity during its 1996 annual conference, but in fact remains deeply divided. This is clear to its members, but they are unlikely to take any action to remedy the situation. There are some sensible elements within the party, but they will not be able to prevail over those who seem to have lost all sense of reason.
