NZ no-hoper set to turn the poll tables
Article Abstract:
Helen Clark, leader of New Zealand's opposition Labour party, was until recently performing very badly in the opinion polls. However, she has suddenly seen a strong increase in support, and now looks set to become the country's first woman prime minister, leading a centre-left coalition. She had previously been regarded as too cool and academic, but has now taken on a softer image and begun attending events where she can meet voters. She is competing against Jim Bolger, leader of the conservative National Party, whose public standing has declined recently.

New Zealand's PM fights for survival as opposition rises spectacularly in polls
Article Abstract:
New Zealand's opposition Labour party, headed by Helen Clark, has seen a strong rise in popularity recently. In contrast, public support for prime minister Jim Bolger and his conservative National Party has declined dramatically. Many observers now believe that Ms Clark will lead a centre-left coalition following the forthcoming general election. This will be the first election under the country's new mixed-member proportional system.

The return of the Iron Lady, Antipodean style
Article Abstract:
New Zealand Prime Minister-designate Jenny Shipley has gained a strong reputation for being extremely determined. She has already come into conflict with Winston Peters, leader of the New Zealand First party, the junior coalition party with her National Party, but has issued reassurances about her commitment to ensure that the coalition continues. It is widely anticipated that she will shift policies further to the right.
