Nutty but nice
Article Abstract:
The Kentish cobnut was extremely popular in the UK in Victorian times, and there were at least 7,000 acres planted with this nut at the beginning of the 20th century. Interest in the cobnut subsequently declined, and only around 250 acres survive as growers have turned to more profitable fruit growing. Consumers have turned instead to hazelnuts imported from Italy, France, Turkey and the US. However, some large supermarkets are now beginning to take cobnuts directly from specialist growers.

Relief among the cowpats
Article Abstract:
Many UK farmers have until recently feared that latest drugs used to treat parasites in cattle would cause damage to the insects and worms which degrade cattle dung. This could in turn lead to falling numbers of pasture birds which feed on dung insects, and of earthworms, which accumulate below patches of dung. However, recent research has indicated that the drugs concerned do break down once in cattle dung, and that insect populations are not significantly affected.

Why moor is less in Britain
Article Abstract:
Large parts of the UK's moorlands have been taken over by plantations of conifers or have been destroyed by ploughing and drainage. Typical moorland vegetation such as heather, mosses and bilberry have also come under attack from bracken, which grows extremely vigorously. It is now thought that only just over 14,000 sq km of moorland remained in England and Wales by the early 1990s, with Welsh heather being in particularly poor condition.
